Gambhir doubtful for WI tour
Wednesday 25 May 2011

Knight Riders and India’s stand-in captain Gautam Gambhir is doubtful for the IPL eliminator match against Mumbai Indians and the West Indies tour due to a shoulder injury

An MRI scan on Tuesday revealed injury to his right shoulder. The exact nature of the injury though is not yet known. It is also not clear whether Gambhir needs surgery, rehab or rest to recover from the injury.

Gambhir picked up the injury while fielding during his team’s last-ball defeat to MI on May 22nd at the Eden Gardens.

His unavailability would be a body blow for KKR’s title aspirations and this might push Gambhir to take the field despite the pain.

Gambhir is also set to lead the Indian cricket team in the one-off T20 international and the five-match ODI series in the West Indies. If Gambhir can’t make the trip, then his deputy Suresh Raina will have to take over the captaincy. Gambhir’s experience will be sorely missed by the young Indian team since it’s already missing the services of seniors like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and captain MS Dhoni. Sehwag is recovering from a shoulder surgery, while the others have been rested for the tour.

In 2008, a shoulder injury had forced Gambhir to miss the away Test series against Australia.
