Former Australian all-rounder Michael Bevan was the quintessential finisher during his playing days always putting a heavy price on his wicket while getting the Aussies home on various occasions.
The 41-year-old was appointed as the coach of the Orissa Ranji Trophy squad this year and he took the boys for a 20-day tour of Australia where they got to play the New South Wales side for whom Bevan played most of his domestic cricket.
Bevan revealed what he felt was the secret of his success as a 'finisher' in ODIs.
“I think for that you got to know when to take the risk and when to minimize it. You must have the ability to rotate the strike and play the shots as well. You've got to know how to absorb pressure in tight situations.” He told The Times of India.
The World Cup-winner also gave his opinion about India skipper MS Dhoni’s notable ability to finish games with ease.
“I think Dhoni always has a lot of scoring options. He knows how to rotate the strike and at the same time is capable of hitting the big shots.” Bevan said. “He is very strong and can hit the ball really hard. He is very flexible in his approach and can stay calm at pressure situations. This makes him one of the best finishers in ODIs.”
Talent is short supply in India and Bevan concurs that he has seen a lot of promising youngsters during his time in the country.
“I have seen lot of talent in India. I feel with better understanding, practice and experience these youngsters will grow up to be good players.” he concluded.
