IPL start date could be changed
Wednesday 12 February 2020

In an interesting move to say the least, world cricket’s governing body International Cricket Council (ICC) has turned down the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) request to change the date of its meeting.
While the meeting is scheduled to take place on March 29 in Dubai, the BCCI had made a request to shift it to another date, as it clashes with the opening match of the 2020 edition of IPL.
As the top board officials are expected to take part in the all-important meeting, the BCCI is now in deep trouble and may need to shift the start date of the IPL to another date.
“The BCCI had written to the ICC to request for a date change, but that was not possible. The dates for these meetings (there is a series of ICC meetings in Dubai from March 27 to 29) were communicated to all the member countries in August last year. All the travel / accommodation / meeting space is booked for all the meeting participants accordingly” a source told The Times of India.
“The days for all the ICC meetings are fixed well in advance. Even the dates for the next annual conference of the ICC, scheduled to be held in Cape Town on July 17 and 18 this year, were finalized last Agust itself,” added the source.
So it is quite clear that there is hardly any chance for the ICC to change the date of the meeting for the sake of BCCI’s request. And that can affect the start of the IPL as well.
However, this is not the only problem for BCCI regarding the start of this season’s IPL.
Rajasthan Royals’ had decided to play three games in Guwahati, where they wanted to begin their campaign. But this has been challenged by a PIL in Rajasthan. Hence there could be another struggle in the making.
As far as the ICC meeting is concerned, the prospect of four-day Test is likely to be discussed alongside several other key issues.
