India will host the T20 World Cup in 2021 as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) retains its hosting rights while Australia, who were supposed to host the tournament in 2022, will now host the postponed edition in 2022.

The decision comes after the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board met via teleconference on Friday.

"The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 that was postponed due to Covid-19 will be held in Australia in 2022. India will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 as planned," the ICC said in a statement.

India will host the T20 World Cup in October-November with the final to be held on November 14. Australia will host the tournament in October-November as well with the final on November 13.

The 50-over World Cup will be held in India in 2023 between October and November with the final on November 26.

The ICC also postponed the Women's World Cup until 2022 in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Women's World Cup was scheduled to be held from February 6 to March 7 in New Zealand.

The BCCI and Cricket Australia were set to discuss the hosting rights of the T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022 during Friday's ICC Board. The T20 World Cup in 2020 was postponed due to the pandemic. Australia were scheduled to host the event from October 18 to November 15.

While the ICC confirmed the postponement of T20 World Cup 2020 in July, it did not announce who will be hosting the 2021 and the 2022 editions. BCCI used the window vacated by T20 World Cup to host the Indian Premier League in the UAE from September 19 to November 10.

"The decision to postpone the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was taken after careful consideration of all of the options available to us and gives us the best possible opportunity of delivering two safe and successful T20 World Cups for fans around the world," the iCC had said.

Cricket Australia were reportedly keen on hosting the T20 World Cup in 2021 as they had already made preparations for the now-postponed edition. However, the BCCI were also not keen on hosting ICC World Cups in successive years.

“The BCCI was originally scheduled to host the T20 World Cup in 2021 and they would like to go ahead. Another reason being, hosting a T20 World Cup in 2022 and then a 50 over global event within a gap of just one year. It would be an overkill," an ICC Board member was quoted as saying by the PTI.
