CAC to meet Virat & Kumble
Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman, the three who sit on the Board's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), are set to have a closed-door meeting with Team India captain Virat Kohli and head coach Anil Kumble.
Late on Saturday, a top source of The Telegraph said: "Because of everything that has been going around, such a meeting just has to take place...
"The CAC needs to know what exactly are Kohli's reservations about Kumble. It has to find out if their relationship has gone beyond the repair stage...
"That's one reason why the CAC didn't finalise anything during its meeting (here) late on Thursday evening...
"However, it may be noted that the CAC is, in principle, opposed to effecting a change. Not merely because of Kumble's very good record, but what if Virat develops reservations about the new coach as well? Then, there'll be no end to problems...
"The timing of the CAC's meeting with Virat and Kumble will be determined by the outcome of the India vs South Africa match on Sunday."
There's talk that Vinod Rai, who heads the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators, could also be present at the closed-door meeting.
The buzz too is that the CAC believes the Virat-Kumble relationship hasn't deteriorated to the extent the one between Sourav and Greg Chappell did, 12 years ago.
India will be touring the West Indies soon after the Champions Trophy. So, if the process of appointing the next head coach/offering a fresh contract to Kumble is delayed, he may be asked to go to the Caribbean pending the CAC's final decision.
If it does come to that, will Kumble oblige in the absence of the bigger picture being cleared?
