Yuvraj chasing BCCI for Rs 3 crores
A few years ago, Yuvraj Singh had appeared in a TV commercial that said, "Jab tak balla chalta hain, thaath hain. Jab balla ruk jaye..." Yuvraj, who played a huge role in India winning the 2011 World Cup at home but who's now in the winter of his career, is himself learning it the hard way that life can be a bitter pill when runs stop to flow.
For the last 18 months, Yuvraj had been chasing the BCCI officials to get his dues, amounting to around Rs 3 crore, cleared. So much so, that his mother Shabnam has also been contacting the BCCI officials to release the amount.
The money the Punjab left-hander is demanding is a 'compensation' for missing out on the first half of the last edition of the IPL, after he suffered an ankle injury while representing India at the 2016 World T20s. As per the BCCI policy, the board insures contracts of all Indian players in the IPL. In the event of a player not able to represent his franchisee in the IPL or missing out on a few matches due to injury sustained while playing for India, the BCCI will compensate the player for loss of income.
In Yuvraj's case, he missed seven league games for Sunrisers Hyderabad, after which he approached the BCCI to compensate him. The board sources said Yuvraj is also planning to approach the Supreme Courtappointed Committee of Administrators, overseeing the functioning of the BCCI.
"Yuvraj has written several letters to the BCCI officials and even his mother has been making the calls on his behalf. His Sunrisers teammate Ashish Nehra, who missed five games, has received his dues from the BCCI but surprisingly, Yuvraj's case is in the limbo," a BCCI source said.
BCCI CEO Rahul Johri and secretary Amitabh Choudhary, were in New Zealand and could not be contacted, while IPL COO Hemang Amin did not respond to messages. A BCCI official told Mirror that Yuvraj's case "had been referred to the office-bearers".
Yuvraj, who is preparing for a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, did not respond to messages and understandably so. A BCCI source said Yuvraj's case could be a matter of "miscommunication". "Maybe his insurance papers were not in order," a board source said.
